Meet Our Team


  • Samantha Hankins

    Samantha began working at Dogwood Animal Hospital July 23, 2014 as a full-time receptionist. She answers phones, schedules appointments, surgeries & procedures, checks clients in/out, takes payments, assists in purchasing flea/tick/heartworm meds, submits refill requests and many other things. She is happily married to her best friend Mark, and they have a dog, Rainey, who is a Chocolate Lab that loves to cuddle and get belly rubs. THey also have a short haired cat named Sara, who will let you love on her all day. She is currently attending Pellissippi State where she plans to graduate May 2018 with an Associate Degree in Business Management. Most weekends you can find her at I-75 Raceway in Sweetwater, TN where she and her husband enjoy dirt track racing and assisting with different areas at the track. They also love baseball & hockey and try to attend the Tennessee Smokies and Knoxville Ice Bears games as time allows. Samantha, in her free time, loves to read and to bake around the holidays.

  • Leslie Lohrber

    Leslie joined Dogwood Animal Hospital in Sept. 2014 as a part-time receptionist. She originally began her veterinary career at Foothills Veterinary Hospital in May 1998. She is married to Jerald with one son and a cat.

Technical Assistants

  • Jenny Allen

    Jenny has worked at Dogwood Animal Hospital since 2006. Before that, she had about 9 years of experience working in a veterinary clinic. She was raised in South Knoxville so Dogwood Animal Hospital just feels like home.She, with her husband and teen-aged step-daughter, currently have 2 yorkies and a dachshund that can do no wrong. They also have 2 guinea pigs that love her for for the gourmet salads that are prepared for them everyday. During any home game, they can be found cheering on the Ice Bears.

  • Angela Gause

    Angela began working at Dogwood in 2002. Prior to that, she spent her time caring for animals on the family farm in South Carolina, then caring for horses and other large animals UTCVM. She is an advocate for spaying and neutering and worked several years helping in spay/neuter clinics. Over the years Angela has had a menagerie of animals but currently is the proud pet-parent to a bouncy little collie mix who enjoys long walks in the woods and ripping squeakers out of chew toys. She also has a few chickens and a cat who rules the roost. When escaping the fur, Angela can be found enjoying all that Knoxville and East Tennessee have to offer.

  • Sheena Zarb

    Sheena started as a Technical Assistant at Dogwood in 2012, with 7 years prior experience from other veterinary practices. She works part-time assisting the veterinarian with routine appointments and surgical procedures, as well as collecting laboratory samples and testing. You may also see her upfront in the afternoons working the front desk. She went to the University of Tennessee and received her bachelors of science degree in 2009. She is married to her husband Phil, and they have two beautiful boys, Oryon and Jasper. Her pets include a standard poodle, a husky,a rag doll cat, and many chickens. In her free time she loves being outdoors hiking, camping, and biking with her family.

Pre-Veterinary Assistants

  • Allison Johnson

    Allison has been a Pre-Veterinary Assistant at Dogwood Animal Hospital part-time since the summer of 2017. Some of the things that she does include talking to pet owners and taking histories, taking care of pets while they stay with us, and helping out the doctors and other staff in so many other ways. She is also a student at the University of Tennessee, working on a major in Animal Science and a minor in Biological Sciences. Her plans for after graduation include applying and hopeful acceptance to a veterinary school. While she is not in school or at Dogwood, some of her hobbies include being a part of the UT Western Equestrian Team and hanging out with her two cats at home.

  • Kelly Spade

    Kelly is a part-time Pre-Veterinary Assistant and has worked for Dogwood Animal Hospital since June of 2017. She is currently a senior, majoring in Animal Science at the University of Tennessee. In her free time, she enjoys playing tennis and spending time with her dog and her hedgehog. She plans to apply to veterinary school in the near future.Various other pre-veterinary students work afternoons and weekends at the hospital as they try to gain the experience needed to gain admittance into a veterinary college. Dogwood Animal is proud to be able to help these young adults attain their dreams.
